On 4th September 2026 Pam Warner of the Bridport Branch of the Royal Naval Association will be celebrating her 100th Birthday, and believe it or not will be hosting an Open Door event at her home from 12 noon. She is asking anyone who knows her to pop in and help her relive those memories and celebrate her milestones.
And what milestones she has seen! Born in 1926, she has lived through the Great Depression, the Second World War and the Blitz, the founding of the NHS and the United Nations, the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, the first flight into space, the first man on the Moon, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the birth of the internet, the arrival of the smartphone, the London Olympics and the extraordinary experience of the Covid-19 pandemic.
From days of undersea cable phone calls to connect to far off countries to instant messaging, social media, face time calls and on into commercial air travel, flights to the moon and pictures of Mars what an incredible century of history to have been part of!
Pam has also played her own part in history through her service in the Navy. She has seen an incredible transformation during her lifetime — from the days when women served mainly ashore as Wrens, supporting those at sea, to women becoming fully integrated into the Royal Navy and serving at sea in roles that would once have been unimaginable. She has also witnessed the Navy itself change from Morse code, paper charts and basic radio communications to today’s nuclear submarines, sophisticated warships, advanced aircraft and digital technology. What a wonderful part of such an extraordinary 100-year journey!
Pam joined Bridport Branch of the RNA in 1987, so has been a member for 39 years. During this time she has been Bridport Branch Chairman, Honorary Secretary & Honorary Treasurer. Along with her husband, Max, she also organised social events, lunches and dinner/dances.
Earlier in 2025, Pam was featured in a YouTube interview in which she spoke about her remarkable career, beginning with her time in the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS) primarily as a Writer (Pay). This interview was recorded as part of a project to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day, with the aim of sharing and preserving personal stories from those who served. Pam reflects on her experiences, her service, and the many changes she witnessed over the years. It’s a wonderful opportunity to hear her story in her own words and to celebrate her contribution.
