David was born the year the Second World War broke out. Unfortunately, David’s father was captured by the Japanese during the war and never returned. David attended a Naval Boarding school and from there joined the RN as a Telegraphist/Communications rating. He served on many ships, the most memorable being HMS Amethyst, but the Yangtse incident happened many years before he served on her.
Before the closing of RNA Axminster Branch David took on the role of Chairman (being a founding member) and was also the Chairman of the RBL Axminster Branch. On the sad closure of Axminster Branch David became a member of RNA Chard Branch. David, also held the position of Head Warden of the Minster Church, St Mary’s in Axminster.
After leaving the Royal Navy David joined the Surrey Police Force, serving in Haselmere until he retired and continued with similar work for Surrey County Council.
David met his first wife, Alma, from the Haselmere area and both moved in time to Uplyme, near Lyme Regis, before moving to Membury. Sadly David became a long time carer for Alma until she passed away.
Unfortunately David was taken into hospital as an emergency and was diagnosed with sclerosis of the liver. The medical team managed to control the issues with the liver but unfortunately, whilst in hospital, David contracted the Coronavirus. Despite a good fight sadly this virus took David’s life.
He is survived by his wife Valery (who remains an Associate Member of Chard Branch) and two children from his previous marriage.
David was cremated at the East Devon Crematorium in Whimple on 14th May 2020 where the
eulogy was given by the former Axminster Mayor and Royal British Legion stalwart Mr.
Mervyn Symes.
